Grey Funnel Line
04:33
|
|||
don't mind the rain, or the rolling sea
the weary night never worried me
but the hardest time in a sailor's day
is to watch the sun as it dies away
It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
the finest ship that sails the sea
is but a prison for the likes of me
but give me wings like Noah's dove
and I'll fly up harbor to the girl I love
It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
oh Lord if dreams were only real
I'd have my hands on that wooden wheel
and with all my heart I'll turn her round
and tell the boys that we're homeward bound
It's one more day on the Grey Funnel Line
I'll pass the time like some machine
until blue water turns to green
then I'll dance on down that walkashore
and sail the Grey Funnel Line no more
and sail the Grey Funnel Line no more

New River Blues
04:56
|
|||
as the new river flows in the night
somewhere honey, some old hog
is stomping on the bog
like a free, like a free stream of light
my heart jumps straight to you tonight
cause you're pretty, lordy knows, and you're fair
and you seem like you kind...of linger there
like a hot, like a hot burnin' flame
my heart jumps straight to you again
for i knew, lordy knows that you're there
and the New River flow, flows round the town
and the king-fisher fishin' in the shoal
my heart jumps straight right out of my soul
and a catfish, catfish on the bottom
i'm up here with the blues, lordy knows that i got 'em
i hope the moonbeams shine down to you
so you can sing away the whole night through
as the New River flows in the night
somewhere honey, some ol' hog
is stomping on the bog
like a free, like a free stream of light
my heart jumps straight to you tonight.
oh, my heart jumps straight to you tonight.

the Diamond is a ship, my lads
for the Davis Strait we're bound
the quay it is all garnished
with bonnie lasses 'round
Captain Thompson gives the order
to sail the ocean wide
where the sun it never sets, my lads
nor darkness dims the sky
AND IT'S CHEER UP, ME LADS
LET YOUR HEART NEVER FAIL
FOR THE BONNY SHIP THE 'DIAMOND'
GOES A FISHIN-FOR THE WHALE
along the quay at Peterhead
the lasses stand around
with their shawls all pulled about them
and the salt tears runnin' down
don't you weep, my bonnie lass
though you be left behind
th' rose will grow on Greenland's banks
before we change our mind
here's health to the 'Resolution'
likewise the 'Eliza Swan'
three cheers for the 'Battler of Montrose'
& the 'Diamond', ship of fame
we wear the trousers of the white
and jackets o' the blue
when we get back to Peterhead
we'll have sweethearts enou'
it'll be bright both day and night
when the Greenland lads come home
our ship is full with oil, my lads
and money to our name
we'll make the cradles for-to rock
and the blankets for-to tear
and every lass in Peterhead
sing "hushabye, my dear"

hi-ho, fishin' all day!
brother got a goldfish put him in a little dish
brother got a goldfish put him in a little dish
turned into a trash fish, swimmin' in the big ditch
trash fish, trash fish swimmin' in the big ditch
trash fish, trash fish swimmin' in the big ditch
all the way from Jericho, to the Gulf of Mexico
fishin' all day in the Matagorda Bay
fishin' all day in the Matagorda Bay
well I caught me a big one, but I let him get away
alligator gar they call him a trash fish
alligator gar they call him a trash fish
if you had a last wish swimmin' in the big ditch
trash fish trash fish jammin' up the waterway
trash fish trash fish jammin' up the waterway
messin' with my fishing line suckin' up the bottom slime
trash fish trash fish jammin' up the waterway
trash fish trash fish jammin' up the waterway
catch him where the blue cat yellow cat had his day
you got your live bait and your artificial lure
you got your live bait and your artificial lure
catch him in the river catch him in the sewer
fishin' all day and i ain't got a bite
fishin' all day and i ain't got a bite
but you know i don't mind, i do it all the time

I don't know much about much
and what I don't know I don't say
and when I have nothing to say,
I'm quiet
if there's occasion to holler, I'll try it
I can make noise with the best
but most of the rest of the time I'm quiet
I've made mistakes in the past
things that I blush over yet
but I hardly ever regret
having been quiet
if I had a T.V. at home
perhaps I would truly enjoy it
I could just leave it alone and it's quiet
I'm not unsociable, no
people are fine in repose
somehow my favorites are those
who are quiet
Quiet's a wonderful sound
sweeter than oboe or fiddle
someday I'm going to be found in the middle of quiet
sing me a song of the sea
soft as the breath of a breeze
sing me to sleep and then please
keep quiet

Black Is the Color
02:10
|
|||
oh black is the color of my true love's hair
his face is something wondrous fair
the prettiest eyes and the neatest hands
I love the ground whereon he stands
I love my love as well he knows
I love the ground whereon he goes
but if you on earth no more i can see
I can't serve you as you have me
the winter's passed and the leaves are green
the time has passed that we have seen
but still I hope the day will come
when you and I will be as one
I go to the clyde to mourn to weep
unsatisfied, I never can sleep
so i write to you in a few short lines
"I'll suffer death ten thousand times"
oh black is the color of my true love's hair
his face is something wonderous fair
the prettiest eyes and the neatest hands
I love the ground whereon he stands

Tumbling Tumbleweeds
03:26
|
|||
see them tumbling down
pledging their love to the ground
lonely but free I'll be found
drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweeds
cares of the past are behind
nowhere to go but I'll find
just where the trail will wind
drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweeds
I know when night has gone
that a new world's born at dawn
I'll keep rolling along
deep in my heart is a song
here on the range I belong
drifting along with the tumbling tumbleweeds
I'm a roaming cowboy riding all day long
tumbleweeds around me sing their lonely song
nights underneath the prairie moon
I'll ride along and sing a tune

I Once Loved a Lass
02:27
|
|||
I once loved a lass and I loved her so well
I hated all others who spoke of her ill
but now she's rewarded me well for my love
for she's gone to be wed to another
when I saw my love to the church go
with bride and bridemaidens, they made a fine show
and I followed 'em on with a head full of woe
for she's gone to be wed to another
when I saw my love sit down to dine
I sat down beside her and poured out the wine
and I drank to the lass that should've been mine
and now she is wed to another
the men of yon forest they asked it of me
"how many strawberries grew in the salt sea"?
but i answered them back with a tear in my e'ye
"how many ships sail in the forest?"
oh dig me a grave dig it so deep
and cover it over with florets so sweet
and I'll lie me down for to take a long sleep
and maybe in time I'll forget her
Oh they dug it my grave and they dug it so deep
and covered it over with florets so sleep
and I lay me down for-to take a long sleep
and maybe by now I've forgot her.

it's that ole devil called love again
gets behind me and keeps giving me that shove again
putting rain in my eyes
tears in my dreams
and rocks in my heart
it's that sly old son-of-a-gun again
he keeps telling me that I'm the lucky one again
but I still have that rain
still have these tears
and these rocks in my heart
suppose I didn't stay?
ran away?
wouldn't play?
the devil what a potion he would brew
he'd follow me around
lift me up
and tear me down
'til I'd be so bewildered
I wouldn't know what to do
might as well give up the fight again
I know damn well he'll convince me he's right again
when he sings that siren song
I got to sing along
with that ole devil called love
with that ole devil called love

Traveling People
03:59
|
|||
I am a freeborn man of the traveling people
got no fixed abode, with nomads I am numbered
country lanes and byways are always my way
I never fancied being numbered
oh we knew the woods, all the resting places
and the small birds sang when wintertime was over
then we'd pack our load and be on the road
they were good old times for the rover
there was open ground where a man could linger
stay a week or two for time was not your master
then away you'd jog with your horse and dog
easy now, no need to go faster
now and then we'd meet up with other travelers
hear the news or else swap family information
at the country fairs, we'd all be meeting there
all the people of the traveling nation
all you freeborn men of the traveling people
every tinker, rolling stone or gypsy rover
winds of change are blowing, old ways are going
your traveling days will soon be over
winds of change are blowing, old ways are going
your traveling days will soon be over

Over the Rainbow
04:59
|
|||
when all the world is a hopeless jumble
and the raindrops tumble all around
heaven opens a magic lane
and when all the clouds darken up the skyway
there's a rainbow highway to be found
leading from your windowpane
to a place behind the sun
just a step beyond the rain...
somewhere over the rainbow
way up high
there's a land that I heard of
once in a lullabye
somewhere over the rainbow
skies are blue
and the dreams that you dare to dream
really do come true
someday I'll wish upon a star
and wake up where the clouds are far behind me
where troubles melt like lemon drops
away above the chimney tops
that's where you'll find me
somewhere over the rainbow
bluebirds fly
birds fly over the rainbow
why, oh why can't I?
someday I'll wake and rub my eyes
and in that land beyond the skies you'll find me
I'll be a laughing daffodil
and leave the silly cares that fill my mind behind me
